Biography

Where is there a garden without a water feature that doesn’t seem to be lacking some soul or vibrancy? As a gardener, landscaper and garden designer Peter May specialised in water gardens. This was a central theme from which his garden designs spread. As an author and photographer a similar thing occurred. In photography, from the core subject of water garden design, a library of water garden and moisture-loving plants evolved; then came images of historical and contemporary gardens all with water in some part as a central theme. Garden style is encompassed with all the water features from all the great garden shows over the last 10 years, with great emphasis on the bizarre humorous or irreverent. In his latest book on “Designing and Creating Water Gardens”, over 400 of his own images were used to illustrate how to do-it-yourself.

Now he has over 20,000, images to choose from that have spread into realms beyond the influence of water: landscaping and gardening in general, from techniques to details like stonework and woodwork; style and the way it has changed and the influences from other cultures; wildlife, natural plants and conservation and also the effects of the weather; plant portraits from bedding to trees and also the details of what makes one plant different from another – the characteristics that make a plant able to survive where others cannot. All the images come in old-fashioned transparencies in 35mm and ‘medium format’ but can be scanned to disc at any preferred resolution.
